DVD III: French Consonants

The Anatomy of French Sounds©: DVD III will concentrate on:

  • Formation of consonants
  • Specific characteristics of consonants in relationship to their position in words
  • Original poems as oral exercises to review each letter
The goal of this program is for the viewer to develop an added appreciation of the French language as well as a deeper understanding of certain sound constructions and letter patterns. Understanding vowel structure is a key element in the general study of French. This program is your basic foundation for French pronunciation.

French requires a certain precision of sound for the words to be understood as French words. Muscle tension and the positions of the lips and tongue play a crucial part in producing the desired sound(s).

This program will help you understand French consonants:

  • The role of each consonant in a word or phonological phrase
  • Individual characteristics of each consonant
  • The relationship between placement and sound (initial, medial, final)
  • Letter combinations involving consonants
  • Letter combinations involving vowels
  • Facets of single and/or double consonants
Are single and double consonants pronounced the same? Is the consonant always pronounced? (Silent consonants)? When you understand these concepts you will be able to study French with less stress and you will be able to reproduce sound(s) properly. You can then capture the melodic profile of each letter and consonant. The conclusion to each lesson is an oral practice exercise that will help you rehearse what we have studied!
