In My Words: The Primary
Originally prepared for "The Level Playing Field," a special presentation of The Koolau News. This piece was published Sunday, Sept. 29 (General Election Week 1 of 6). As the Republican candidate for Senate District 23, I had many wonderful experiences during my Primary Election campaign. It was rewarding to meet new people and receive their support, and also gratifying to receive steadfast encouragement from friends helping me out on the vigorous road to voting day. I didnt face much negativity along the way, and Im happy and proud that we have run a clean campaign. Throughout my campaign, I met some residents who were long-time Democrats wanting to vote for change. They want to see a new brand of leadership from the Executive level down and have indicated they will vote Republican. I have been fortunate enough to have a close and loving family supporting me through this. They enjoy the work campaigning entails, and are eager to be involved, which in turn invigorates me. Support from the GOP Caucus at work has been most encouraging. My true moment of truth in knowing I had made the right decision in running was simply working at the State Capitol and learning how the legislative process makes an impact, good or bad, on the lives of people. This realization played a pivotal role in my decision to seek public office. My advice to those citizens interested in serving in public office in the future would be to seek a suitable office for the right reason, and only the individual can determine his or her own reason. To make this experience most rewarding, surround yourself with friends and family you trust and it makes campaigning exciting and fulfilling. |
