GETTING CORNY IN KAPOLEI
http://www2.hawaii.edu/~kubo/archives/9_27_99.htmlNIA Trying to make our way through a maze of 10-foot high corn sounds more like a field of nightmares than a field of dreams to we who are spatially-challenged, but Brett Herbst not only thinks it's cool, he gets paid to do it. Looking eerily like crop circles gone mad, Herbst designed the 6-acre MAiZE out of 300,000 stalks of corn in a field, not in Iowa, but in Kapolei. And for $7 ($5 for keiki) you can pay for the privilege of getting lost. Better hurry, going be gone by the end of November. The Star-Bulletin has a photo of the locally grown one. But you can see images of some of the 45 other MAiZEs here.
SWIFT SAILING
http://www2.hawaii.edu/~kubo/archives/9_28_99.htmlFavorable winds have given the Hokule'a a huge head start on their journey to Rapa Nui. After only 5 days, they've managed to cover more than half the distance (as the 'iwa flies) to their destination. The crew will soon begin the arduous tacking back and forth when the winds shift and to ensure that they don't sail right past the island. See the Polynesian Voyage Society site for some great images of the crew and canoe.
PEACE IN THE VALLEY
http://www2.hawaii.edu/~kubo/archives/9_29_99.htmlMalama Makua has succeeded in winning a settlement with the US Army to temporarily halt exercises (in odda words bombing) in Makua Valley until it completes a comprehensive environmental impact study, a process which could take up to a year and a half. The military has been using Makua since 1929 and has a lease ($1 a year) until 2029.
OYEZ, OYEZ
http://www2.hawaii.edu/~kubo/archives/9_30_99.htmlThe US Supreme Court will open its session on Monday. One of the cases which will be most closely watched here at home is Rice v. Cayetano which challenges limiting OHA elections to Hawaiians. OHA has set up a web site for anyone wanting more information on the case at NativeHawaiians.com. The site includes background information and legal documents including the 9th Circuit decision and amicus briefs by the Solicitor General's office (the feds), Hawaii's congressional delegation, the National Congress of American Indians and others. KITV will also be showing two documentaries, "The Public Land Trust" and "The Hawaiian People - Reconciling the Past, Building the Future" on October 6 at 6:30pm and October 10 at 4:30pm.
NOTHING PERSONAL
http://www2.hawaii.edu/~kubo/archives/10_1_99.htmlNIA Corporations are funny. Especially ones that are getting sued. You'd think that if a company had a store manager who had increased sales 92 percent over the past year, they'd be pretty darn happy. Especially when the store in second place had only seen a 27 percent increase. Not Chevron Hawaii. They filed suit against dealer Frank Young who operates the Chevron-owned station first opened by his father in 1953. Chevron alleges that Young has repeatedly violated the terms of his contract with them regarding hours of operation (buggah no stay open when he supposed to). It's just coincidence, says Chevron, that Young has been a vocal critic of Chevron's pricing policy, currently the subject of a lawsuit against Chevron by the state. Oh, and by the way, this is the first time that Chevron has sued a Hawaii dealer over operating hours. More details at the Star-Bulletin.
SPORTS UPDATE
The University of Hawai`i Rainbows last night beat the University of Texas El Paso's Miners 33-3. The Miners scored first in the first quarter, but it was all 'Bows from there. The 'Bows are now 4-1 overall, 2-0 in the Western Athletic Conference, a showing it hasn't seen since 1992.
